Welcome aboard, and thank you for joining me on my journey into madness as I build my replica F-16C Block 50 simulator cockpit (sim pit). I specialize in flying the Viper with my virtual squadron mates and dabble in the other aircraft available in DCS.
I am a A320/321 Captain for a major US airline with over 22,000 hours flight time. Unfortunately, my dream of flying the beautiful Viper was squashed by the 1990's "peace dividend" and vision requirements.
However, through the construction of this simpit and flying with my virtual squadron, I can get a small taste of what it may have been like. I aim to construct this simpit as close to a replica as my abilities allow. It is certainly a challenge that requires many skills, creativity, problem solving, and patience.
When will it be complete? Always forward but never done. There is always something that can be improved.
If you want more information than the videos provide, please leave a comment.

2nd Anniversary F-16C Block 50 SimPit Update
Welcome to the 2 year update. I will cover all components added or changed since the 1 year update in Mar 2023 which is linked here: ua-cam.com/video/2iU5hhXSkQI/v-deo.htmlsi=loF8yPqv99siOdGT
Since last year I have greatly improved my processes and designs. I have become more efficient at making parts. But as always, I have a keen eye to always improve components as my skills grow.
By the time this video publishes, there are likely to be more additions. they happen quickly these days.
Flying this is a lot of fun. But the construction is a highly rewarding mental challenge. I love every minute of it.
Thanks for your valuable time,
Quincy

Head Tracking in Low Light (Not TrackIR)
Переглядів 4766 місяців тому
While I prefer AimXYZ camera for headtracking over TrackIR, it has 2 shortcomings. 1. It's low light/no light performance. I don't like shining lights on my face during a night mission in a dark room to get it to work. AimXYZ does not reply to emails when suggesting a IR camera and IR illumination. Too bad for them because this Amazon camera was only $35. Much cheaper than the limited AimXYZ of...
Making Indicator Lenses for the F-16C Viper SimPit: Featuring the ECM Panel
Переглядів 4138 місяців тому
This is my workflow when creating lenses for push button/indicators like those on the ECM panel. This is the same process used for the TWP and TWA as well. The ECM panel indicators are the most complicated because each button also has 4 separate status lights. That means 10 wires for each button and 80 total not including the other controls on the panel. The process for creating the lens is the...

Since I was working on another panel, I figured I might as well make a short video about prototyping and finalizing the top of the panel. I could have left out the screw-up and pretended everything is always perfect. But it isn't. While my processes are always improving and these projects become quicker, there are always time-consuming pitfalls. You should always expect the same. Have enough ma...

26 Oct 2023 F-16C Viper SimPit Update: All About Knobs
Переглядів 34210 місяців тому
An overview of my process for making Korry/EHC knobs. These knobs are very expensive if you can find them at all. It's unlikely that you will. It is much cheaper to buy a small 3D resin printer and the software to operate it than to buy the knobs. Sorry, but my knobs are not for sale. They are labor intensive, there are too many variables in individual simpits, and you probably wouldn't like wh...

Переглядів 87711 місяців тому
Having trouble binding your non-electrical WinWing finger lifts to operate in your DCS F-15E Strike Eagle? Follow these simple directions for how to do it. It's confusing but easier than you think if you know what to bind to. As an alternative, you should be able to use the F-15EX grip without the finger lift, but bind the two flat extra buttons on the face of the left grip. Going to full idle ...

DCS F-16C AAR - External View (Part 2)

The external view of the Part 1 refueling is interesting. It is an opportunity to observe the relationships between the PDL (Pilot Director Lights), aircraft positioning, and markings on the boom. What is perceived inside the cockpit as acceptable positioning, is clearly demonstrated to be outside the very small window to maintain contact and take fuel. If you fly missions with a squadron, you ...

I originally recorded this for a friend and co-worker who flew the KC-135 and KC-46. It's interesting to get his feedback on this evolution. Withing DCS, and gaming in general, aerial refueling is widely accepted to be one of the most difficult tasks to learn and master. I am certainly no expert even after more than a year of practice. I'd consider myself "adequate". But I am always practicing ...

how much would it cost for me to buy one of these from you

@@GDViperWorks thats understandable im just looking for something like this for a content creator house
Could you possibly link me to your video on your cockpit build I'm trying to build my own possibly link the plans to me or any information that will help me build a cockpit would be greatly appreciated been flying DCS about a year now been starting to get many upgrades MFDs and stuff I don't think it's going to look as nice as yours but if you could do that for me thank you
@billbuckman I cannot. For several reasons. 1. I paid for the plans. 2. I signed an agreement to not share them as they are proprietary. 3. I wouldn't recommend the plans regardless.
8:28 turn left and peek right. not make any sense. i turn left and look left screen. i understand if trackir track and monitor is moving. any where you look monitor follow. nobody invent that yet LOL
VR is the best way to do head tracking very immersive
interesting vid, thnx
@GDViperWorks Hey, just wanted to say I love your videos. And anxious to see what new updates you've been up to over the last few months.
After that update, I've been taking a break from it. It's the nature of things that you devote all of your free time to. That doesn't mean I have stopped completely. I did go to Flight Sim Expo. Neat stuff for the commercial and general aviation simmers. Nothing really that would improve my project. I did aquire a Quest 3 to dabble in the VR realm. But mostly because I want to pursue mixed reality. While this seems easier with BMS right now, ED is not supporting this with 3d cockpit models for use as a mask. I don't see anything on the horizon for that capability in DCS. I am also at a point in the pit where many of the open projects are the most difficult ones. Other open items are furnishings and detail parts that do not add a lot to the capabilities of the pit. I haven't even flown it much, either. Sometimes, it's hard to get motivated after getting home from a few transcons. But I will get back into it, both construction and flying. Thanks for checking in.
I just ordered the new F-16 Simpit from SimGears and looking for information on the MFDs. They said that the Thrustmaster MFD bezels are compatible but no mention of the displays themselves. Since it is a year later now, I am looking for suggestions on products that would be available. I have the WinWing TQS and agree, it is 100% functional and does a nice job but I would like something more accurate with the same quality. I am using the TM F-16 stick with the RealSimulator FSSB R3 Lightning.
@@LoosMoose I don't have any information about their deskpit. I use cubesim displays and Thrustmaster MFDs.
i would make the eject handle single 3 times in a short period rather than change game code

Hi 3 years later. Question I have is for the USA BB line. As it's now split 3 ways, If I reset all 3 lines, I only need to research to the Colorado once and then play till I reach the Vermont, Montana and Louisiana to get 2x per line. Is this correct and is it an efficient way to do it? EDIT: I have 500,000xp on the tier 1 Erie. Does that help to research the USA BB line?
where did u get the frame?
awesome, what software do u use for your buttkicker?,your gun sounds a lot louder than mine..
It's just the standard Buttkicker software.
any chance i can maybe get my hands on one if you know? I'm trying to switch from my winwing and realsim is out of stock everywhere and I'm dying to get my hands on one
Awesome job bud🎉❤😮

is there blueprints you sell?
Sorry but no.
Nice work! I've been designing and am planning to build a standalone RWR unit for myself, albeit F-14 styled. How did you manage to control the (real) display brightness using the rotary switch?
It's a "joystick axis" bound in game to the input.
@@GDViperWorks Thanks, and, oh, yeah, right! My mistake, don't know how I forgot about controlling ingame also controls the other.. are there any STL files available for the backplate?
HI, HOW TO PLAY DCS MULTIPLAYER USING THE HELIOS MOD WITHOUT GIVING SCRIPTS PROBLEM AND THE DCS SERVER SHIELD IS RED?
How's the camera working for you? Did you resolve the issue of blinking lights/ jitter problem?
The jitter was solved by turning image smoothing all the way up. It has been great so far.
I think you can only use the HMCS to create marks if you are in VIS mode?
Love it, great job
Where did you buy plans for the frames and tub?
It's no longer available. So look at Invictus for some.
how did you do that?
It's in the description.
False! A simpit is NEVER done ! 😅😅 Good job my man
How much does this cabin cost?
Hello I am from Iraq. I want to buy a ready-made cabin like this, where can I buy it and what is its price?
I am not in the business of building or selling cockpits or parts.
Nice update and work on your cockpit. Interesting listening to your struggles with specific boards to run your switches. I don’t know anything about DCS but I noticed a lot of DCS builders rely on arduinos and Leo etc. have you ever thought about Pokeys? You would have any of the issues you talked about. You can literally assign each pin to do anything and you don’t have to be a software engineer either as it has its own powerful and endless UI to set each pin how you like. I’m using all real F16 panels so as you can imagine I have all sorts of different and complicated switches which all run by Pokeys with zero issues. Also that’s too bad about your DEd. I see you ventured into Martin for your TQS you should get his DED and PFD. Expensive but top quality and I’ve been using mine now for 7 years with no issues. Keep up the good work.
J… I have the pokeys boards but never implemented them. I went all in on the Bodnar/Arduino solution to have HID capability to bind other aircraft as well. I moved away from pure Arduinos because of the issues of binding for multiple aircraft and they get unreliable when you have many of them. A few seem to remain reliable. The Bodnars are bulletproof and no coding. I have all Martin parts for what is important, as you know. I’m going to try to build and code my own DED. The best part about it is, if it fails, I build another cheaply. I don’t rely on anyone else for a replacement. That has motivated me to make all my own parts to the greatest extent possible. I love watching your pass through videos. I look forward to a viable option for DCS. It is the ultimate endgame. Head tracking with a fixed 120fps screen is great, but it is still a 55” soda straw with no depth perception.
@@GDViperWorks I have a hard time believing DCS will not implement AR. It is the future for guys like us and it will blow your mind! I never thought about multiple aircraft. Im Viper all the way so that’s not an issue tor me. lol
For my ejection handle I programmed the triple press in the arduino code to avoid having to mess either the LUA files. Love the setup!
Since this is an input, it is connected to a Bodnar as a “button”. Since there is no control binding in DCS for the seat arm and a 3 press eject, I have to do it with the lua mod. That adds the lines to the control menus. Then I bind like any other button. It’s not hard to mod the lua each update. I have save a shortcut to the file and have a text file with the code I then copy and paste in. I can do it with OVGME but just haven’t bothered yet.
What coding did you do with your Ejection Handle? I have a real one as well that is keyboard emulated with my card but I still have to pull it 3 times unfortunately. Also the arming handle I do the same thing with each update lol.

This is freaking fantastic. So glad you decided to let the rest of us come with on this journey. I just sit here gob smacked. I can not wait for the first fully functional test flight. Please do it live!
I have been flying it for about a year and a half. It just becomes more complete over time.
1:53 - let me guess - you turned the afterburner on before you were out of the garage, right?
very nice, seems like a good sulution for someone who doesnt want all the extra stuff on their head.
links would have been nice.
JDAMs have to be set to VIS mode to use the HMCS function. For whatever reason you cannot get the MKPT symbology in PRE mode.
Very nice, clean setup. Where are you exporting the ICP from? I'm trying to do the same thing with an Android tablet and all I can find is 'Viper Device' which shows both ICP and DED and I don't want that. Can't seem to get helios to export an ICP and Capt Zeen seems to be the entire dash. Please help pilot.
I haven't had that setup in several years. I really can't answer that question.
@@GDViperWorks Well, you only posted this vid 2 yrs ago so that's not several years. And I find it hard to believe that a man who put so much into a sim pit can't remember how he exported the ICP but whatev. Thanks for your help!
Good job on the cockpit. If you are simulating NVIS then you should turn the brightness down for your back lighting almost 70%. That’s a common misconception guys are doing witb their cockpits. At the brightness your NODs would be flooded with light bloom. The actual NVIS panels are very dim compared to blue/white panels.
Dare I ask where you got the cockpit fabricated or did you do it yourself?
I built it off plans. Look at earlier videos.
❤@@GDViperWorks
I recommend using Asymmetric Battle mode, adjusting your economic bonuses to earn max FXP. I used the GFK to do this and you can rack up a lot of FXP and commander Xp, credits, and ship Xp in no time! We just have to wait on WG to start up asymmetric battle mode again. Great video!!
Imagine adding an AR headset to this. That way you can actually look around while still using all the buttons and what not.
Doing similar, but in a clear resin to allow backlight through. First coat is white, then black, then the final grey. The brass inserts are cool as the inner shaft in resin wears on an encoder
